The Importance of Backing Up Your Website

Unfortunately more and more website administrators don’t realize how important it is to regularly backup their files and databases. Most simply rely on luck that their data won’t be lost. Usually website admins simply ignore this responsibility since it is not an immediate threat, at least not until something happens to the web server. Often times the chore of backing up data gets put off, delayed and some admins regard backing up as a nuisance.

Servers break down and hard drives fail, don’t they realize the huge risk they are taking?

Be familiar with the webhosting company that you use, regardless if how big they are and what services they offer. Even if your hosting company backs up data, should catastrophe ensue your better off to be prepared. Have a recovery plan in case the worst should happen.

It’s understandable that you don’t want to backup your date during a busy time of day. Set your backup schedule for a convenient time during the week. Backing up at the end of the day usually works well. Backing up will be less annoying if you can do it while you’re not using your server or if you’re just plain not there.

Backing up your website data takes patience and persistence, don’t give up. Once you have determined a backup schedule, do your best to stick with it. Sticking to a backup routine can be difficult, especially for people who constantly work online. The faster you can develop a habit of backing up your files, the more you will benefit from knowing you data is safe. Don’t be tempted to miss or put off your website backup, we are all busy so don’t be lazy.

It is a good idea to test your backup files after a while. You can test your backup by restoring it on another system. Evaluating your backed up data is a great way to see if you are keeping the right files. Knowing which files to keep and which to not to keep will help make the backup process quicker and use less hard disk space. Backup only what you need in an emergency, the rest is trash.

Look for ways to automate the backup process and make it simpler. There are several options with software and hardware that can make backing up and restoring your data as simple as pushing a button.

In the end, knowing that your website data is secured feels great.
